Why this matters right now Insurance companies are quietly dropping AI coverage. What’s happening Big insurers have started adding new rules to business policies that say problems involving AI aren’t covered. Standard exclusion forms took effect January 2026 — the changes are arriving in renewal packets now. Read the plain-English guide to the new AI exclusions → Why it affects you — even if you “don’t use AI” A website chatbot, an email-writing tool, software that screens applications or sets prices — most businesses use AI without thinking of it that way. If one of those causes a problem and your policy has a new rule, the insurance may not help. Why nobody notices Renewals are sent as if nothing changed. The new rule sits pages deep, in legal language. The only way to catch it is comparing this year’s document to last year’s, line by line — which almost nobody does. That’s the part we do for you. How it works Three steps. You do the first one. 1 Send two documents Last year’s policy and this year’s renewal, as PDFs. The form below takes about 2 minutes. 2 We compare every page Technology helps with the reading — but a real person checks every finding against your actual documents before anything is sent. Nothing unchecked reaches you. 3 You get a plain-English report Within 48 hours: everything added, removed, or reworded — with the exact page it’s on and what the words mean, in normal language. What you actually receive Your Renewal Change Report shows you the change — with your own eyes. Here’s what one finding looks like. This year “This policy does not apply to any claim arising out of, or in any way involving, the use of artificial intelligence…” In plain English A new rule was added this year. It says the policy won’t cover claims connected to AI — and the words “in any way involving” make it very broad. Worth showing to your broker before you sign. That’s good news, and it’s worth having in writing. One important thing: this is a reading service, not advice. We show you exactly what changed in your documents — your insurance broker or attorney is the right person to tell you what to do about it. Our report makes that a much better conversation. How your documents are handled: sent over an encrypted connection, seen only by the people producing your report, never used for anything else — including training AI — and deleted from our systems within 14 days of delivery. If we can’t read them, nothing happens and they’re deleted. Prefer to check it yourself? Here’s exactly how — five steps, free. 1 Search the renewal for the words “artificial intelligence”Then try “algorithm,” “machine learning,” “automated,” and “generative.” New rules rarely announce themselves on the first page — they’re usually buried in an attachment. 2 Look at how strict the wording isThere’s a big difference between “problems caused by AI aren’t covered” and “any problem involving AI isn’t covered.” The second one can reach almost anything a computer touched. 3 Put this year’s and last year’s documents side by sideThis comparison is the whole job — and the part almost nobody does. It’s also exactly what we do for you, free, if you’d rather not spend the evening on it. 4 Write down where your business actually uses AIWebsite chat, writing tools, résumé screening, pricing or scheduling software — including AI built into programs you already pay for. Most owners find the list is longer than they thought. 5 Ask your broker one question — by email, not by phone“Does this policy exclude AI-related claims, and if so, what would it take to cover them?” Email matters because the written answer is the one that counts later. Good to know: a new AI rule isn’t automatically a problem. If your business truly doesn’t touch AI, you may lose nothing. The problem is signing without knowing the rule is there. Who we are, honestly Why a free service is reading insurance policies. We come from the insurance world Our team’s background is in the insurance industry — which is exactly how we know that renewals change quietly, that almost nobody compares the documents, and that the fine print is written to be skimmed. We built the service we watched policyholders need. We’re independent, on purpose We are not an agency or a broker, we don’t sell policies, and no insurance company pays us. That independence is the point: our only job is telling you what your documents say — we have no reason to shade it. Free is the honest price for now A service like this lives or dies on trust, and trust is earned by being right — not by charging early. We also publish overall statistics on what’s changing in business renewals (never anyone’s documents or names). If we ever sell anything, this page will say so plainly. Fair questions Straight answers. Why is it free? What’s the catch? No catch, and here’s the honest reason. We’re new, and a service like this lives or dies on trust — a wrong report would finish us; a free one only costs us time. We also publish overall statistics about what’s changing in business renewals (never anyone’s documents, name, or company — just counts, like how many renewals we’ve seen add an AI rule). If we ever sell anything, it will say so plainly on this page. Your documents are never the product and your email address is never sold. What happens to my documents? They’re sent over an encrypted connection, used only to produce your report, seen only by the people producing it, never used for anything else — including training AI — and deleted from our systems within 14 days of delivery. If you cancel before delivery, they’re deleted immediately. Couldn’t I just paste my policy into ChatGPT? You can, and for a first look you should. Two differences: a chatbot reading a 60-page policy will sometimes report changes that aren’t there and miss ones that are — and nothing it says is checked. Every finding in our report is confirmed by a person against your actual pages before it’s sent, and the date it was checked is printed on the report. The checking is the service. What if nothing changed between the two documents? Then your report says so, and lists the sections we checked. That’s the good outcome — and it’s worth having in writing before you sign. Can you tell me whether I should accept the renewal? No, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Whether a change matters for your business depends on facts we don’t know and judgments a licensed professional should make. We tell you what the documents say. Your broker or attorney tells you what to do about it — and our report makes that a better conversation. Who is behind TargetUp? An independent document-review project built by people with a background in the insurance industry. We are not an insurance agency, not a broker, and nobody here is a licensed insurance producer or consultant — which is exactly why the report is a factual comparison and not advice. Since January 1, 2026, insurers have been able to attach three new standard endorsements — CG 40 47, CG 40 48, and CG 35 08 — that remove AI-related coverage from business liability policies. They arrive quietly, as one new form number on a renewal that otherwise looks identical to last year. Here’s what each one does, and how to find out if yours has one. Compiled from the public sources cited at the bottom of this page · Published September 1, 2026 · Updated as new filings appear What’s happening, in one paragraph For years, most business liability policies simply didn’t mention AI — so AI-related claims were often covered by default. Insurers call that “silent AI,” and they are ending it. ISO (the organization that writes the standard policy forms most carriers use) introduced three optional endorsements, effective January 1, 2026, that explicitly remove generative-AI-related coverage from commercial general liability policies. On top of that, individual carriers have been filing their own AI exclusions — some of them labeled “absolute.” None of this appears in your policy automatically: a carrier has to attach the endorsement, and the usual moment for that is your renewal. The three ISO endorsements CG 40 47 The full exclusion Attached to a commercial general liability policy, it excludes coverage under both Coverage A and Coverage B — bodily injury, property damage, and personal & advertising injury — when the claim arises out of generative artificial intelligence. This is the broadest of the three, and the one to look for first. CG 40 48 The advertising-injury exclusion Narrower: it applies only to Coverage B — personal and advertising injury — arising out of generative AI. If your business uses AI anywhere in its marketing, content, or communications, this is the one that touches that risk. CG 35 08 The products & completed-operations exclusion Applies to the Products/Completed Operations coverage part: bodily injury or property damage arising out of generative AI. Relevant if what you sell, build, or install could involve AI — including AI embedded in software or tools you use to produce it. It’s not just the standard forms Individual carriers have gone further. Coverage attorneys have documented Berkley companies introducing what the forms themselves call “absolute” AI exclusions in directors & officers, errors & omissions, and fiduciary liability policies — barring claims “based upon, arising out of, or attributable to” essentially any use, deployment, or development of AI, under a definition of AI broad enough to reach software many businesses have used for years. Hamilton Insurance Group has used language excluding claims “in any way involving” generative AI — naming tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney directly. The words matter enormously: “caused by” AI is a narrow gate; “in any way involving” AI can reach almost anything a computer touched. Get the free human check If you find one: it’s not automatically the end Two things are true at once. First, a new exclusion is a real reduction in what your policy promises, and you should know it’s there before you sign. Second, coverage attorneys point out that even broad exclusions don’t always end the story: courts construe exclusions narrowly and against the insurer; a lawsuit mixing AI and non-AI allegations may still obligate the insurer to defend; an exclusion read so broadly it would “swallow” the whole policy can be challenged as making coverage illusory; and older policy years without the exclusion may still respond to claims that span time. Whether any of that helps in a specific situation is exactly the kind of question a licensed broker or coverage attorney should answer — our job is only to make sure you see the change before it’s signed. The one question worth sending your broker today, by email: “Does my renewing policy add CG 40 47, CG 40 48, CG 35 08, or any other AI-related exclusion that my current policy doesn’t have — and if so, what would it take to cover those risks?” Email, not phone — the written answer is the one that counts later. Good to know: a new AI endorsement isn’t automatically a problem for every business. If your operations truly don’t touch AI — increasingly rare, but possible — you may lose little. The problem is signing without knowing the rule is there. Common questions Is the AI exclusion in my policy automatically? No. These are optional endorsements — your carrier has to attach them, and the usual moment is renewal. That’s why the renewal packet, not the news, is where you find out. My business “doesn’t use AI.” Does this still matter? Probably. A website chatbot, an email-writing assistant, résumé screening, pricing or scheduling software, AI features inside programs you already pay for — most businesses use AI without thinking of it that way. Under broad wording like “in any way involving,” that everyday use is what an exclusion can reach. What does “absolute” mean in an absolute AI exclusion? In practice: an exclusion written with no exceptions or carve-backs, applying regardless of any other contributing cause. It’s the broadest form the language comes in — which is also why coverage attorneys argue courts shouldn’t always read it literally. Where does the exclusion actually appear in the documents? Usually as a new form number in the endorsement list on the declarations pages, with the full text attached deeper in the packet. It rarely announces itself on page one — which is why searching the PDF and comparing against last year’s list works better than reading front to back. CG 40 47 (Exclusion — Generative Artificial Intelligence) is an optional ISO endorsement, effective January 1, 2026. When a carrier attaches it, claims connected to generative AI — a chatbot’s answer, AI-drafted content, AI-assisted work product — can fall outside the policy entirely, on both major coverage parts. Because “arising out of” is historically read broadly in insurance policies, the practical reach can be wider than owners expect. “…arising out of the use of generative artificial intelligence”Scope language, applied to bodily injury, property damage, and personal & advertising injury What that can mean for a business like yours A customer claims your AI chatbot gave harmful guidance — the bodily-injury claim it triggers may not be covered. An ad your team generated with AI allegedly infringes or defames — that’s Coverage B territory, also excluded. You don’t “use AI” officially, but an employee quietly does — the exclusion doesn’t care about your AI policy, only the claim’s connection to generative AI. How to spot it Look at the forms schedule (often titled “Forms and Endorsements” or listed on the declarations pages). Those happen to be exactly the claims generative AI most often produces — AI-written marketing copy, AI-generated images in ads, AI social posts. CG 40 48 carves that risk out while leaving bodily-injury and property-damage coverage alone, which is why some carriers pick it over the full CG 40 47. “…personal and advertising injury arising out of generative artificial intelligence”Scope limited to the Coverage B insuring agreement What that can mean for a business like yours AI-generated ad imagery allegedly copies a photographer’s work — the infringement claim lands in excluded territory.
